Gaslamp History

The Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego almost didn't happen. Imagine there being no city by the bay but instead, dry, uninhabited land with no chance of thriving due to lack of natural resources. This was once the reality of the place now known as San Diego and Gaslamp Quarter. After a failed attempt by William Heath Davis to build a "new town" apart from the old town inhabited by Spanish settlers, Alonzo E. Horton bought his vision and resourceful spirit to San Diego from the east coast. In 1867, the first steps to Horton's San Diego Gaslamp Quarter plan began to take form when he purchased 960 acres of land, adjacent to Davis' previous subdivision, for 27 1/2 cents an acre. Through a big economic boom, a dire depression and a decline then revitalization of the city, Gaslamp Quarter has survived to become one of the premier parts of San Diego life.
